For every annoying cliche character, there’s always one or two that really leave a lasting impression on us in an anime. Whether it be through how they’re not defined by their cliche or by how they manage to be an exciting character in a unique way. I’ve seen several animes with tons of great female characters but none have entertained and mesmerized me more than these 5 characters. This is a list of my top 5 personal favorite anime characters, not a definitive list of the ‘best’ female characters by any means. These are characters that I personally can never forget.
5. Ryougi Shiki (Kara no Kyoukai)
A woman as mysterious as she is beautiful; the star of the Kara no Kyoukai films is a powerful fighter with a fancy for the macabre and a very dark past. It’ll take watching everything there is of the films to even come close to getting a good picture of her, yet even then she remains a huge mystery. Elegant and strong, with dry witty remarks and clever deductions, you’ll be spellbound by this character all the way through the films. Films which by the way, I can only describe as magical. A truly magical experience.
4. Saeko Bushujima (Highschool of the Dead)
A seemingly calm and collected upper classman with amazing sword skills turns out to not only be a vicious fighter but also one of the most headstrong characters in Highschool of the Dead. Saeko is a character that brings a lot of common sense, sex appeal and unmatched sword skill to the already fully loaded cast of the anime, and she’s my favorite because of all these things. She’s as fair as she is strict, laid back as she is serious, and as straight edge as she is versatile. Discovering her darker side adds even more depth to the character and she manages to become more interesting as she develops. I’d honestly say that I straight up respect this character.
3. Satellizer El Bridget (Freezing)
The heroine from the anime ‘Freezing’ is the embodiment of the phrase ‘never give up’. An immensely strong fighter with a steel will that’s very refreshing and surprising, which makes for some intense fights and really cool moments. As cold and distant as she may seem on the surface, she can be very cute and calm at times too, especially around her ‘partner’ Kazuya. Satellizer is one of those few female characters that really brings the whole ‘I will not lose!!’ attitude to the table, and it makes for a deep and endearing character overall.
2. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
With strength to rival that of Snow from FFXIII and an iron will dedication to her friends, especially Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan is one hell of a woman. Easily one of the most skilled soldiers in the show, Mikasa is consistently impressive in how she fights and her reasoning ability is right up there too. While she seems stone cold in combat she’s a lot more reserved outside of it, yet still able to speak her mind when necessary. Given her tragic past it could have created a much more depressed character, but thanks to Eren’s intervention in a crucial moment in her life she transformed into one of the most awesome characters in the anime.
1. Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
With 3 movies and 2 anime series under her belt, Motoko Kusanagi knocks it out of the park by being, in my opinion, one of not only the strongest female characters but also one of the strongest beings in anime history. A super hacker, an ace detective, a military arms specialist, a tactician, a buxom beauty, and many other qualities are but a few of what makes Motoko such a phenomenal character. A character that you spend so much time with in the series yet you still know so little about, as well as a character that excites me as much as she terrifies me. Motoko Kusanagi encompasses everything that makes not only an awesome female character but also an awesome character overall.
So that’s my top 5, characters from animes that I do recommend, despite not all the content being for everyone. What are your top 5 favorite female anime characters?
