-My Top 5 Favorite Modern Gaming Action Heroes-

Just like how I looked up to Ratchet and Jak back in the PS2 era of gaming, this generation brought its own gaming icons with it. I’m a huge fan of action games and each of these games has a main character that signifies what the game is all about. This is a list of my top 5 favorite modern gaming action characters:

5. John ‘Soap’ MacTavish (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series)

SoapThe hero of the Modern Warfare games started off without a voice or face in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but became one of the leaders of your team in the sequels. From the events of COD4 to the crazy action set-pieces of Modern Warfare 2 and 3, Soap consistently did what was necessary to ensure the success of the mission. While most would put Captain Price on this list, I think Soap deserves the spot for being the most prominent through all 3 games and it was a fun ride throughout. He may not be as iconic as Ghost but I think he deserves the spot regardless.

4. Marcus Fenix (Gears of War series)

MarcusMarcus Fenix goes through hell and back in each Gears of War title, retaining the same vicious scowl and wise-cracking attitude each time. The events of all of the Gears of War games are insane, bloody and sometimes unbelievable, but Marcus and his team always know what to do, even if that involves cutting the arteries of a giant worm on the inside. While it starts off from a sense of duty or revenge, Marcus’ journey becomes more personal, especially when his dad is involved in the third and final game of the trilogy. Marcus can hit hard, talk trash and get the job done.

3. Nathan Drake (Uncharted series)

NathanDrakeNathan Drake doesn’t seem to comprehend the concept of danger. The amount of things he climbs, the fire-fights he gets himself into and the hidden wonders he discovers all just seem like a regular day. Often considered the Indiana Jones of gaming, or the male Lara Croft, Drake is an adventurer who assassinates like Sam Fisher and climbs like Spider-Man, and it’s always very fun. Sometimes he’s a bit over ambitious and the events of the games show that he might be way in over his head. But with his eye always on the prize, Nathan Drake is one hell of an action hero.

2. Max Payne (Max Payne series)

MaxPayneWhile this character is technically a last gen character, due to his first two games being on PS2 and Xbox, his newest game Max Payne 3 cements him as one of gaming’s toughest action characters. Max Payne delivers a storm of bullets and nihilistic monologues in equal measure. Rockstar took Remedy’s title and did it justice with Max Payne 3, evolving a character that was already quite cool and tough into a man who retains these features but is more critical of his own life. Max Payne pulls all the usual action movie tricks in Max Payne 3 and continues to show that he’s the king of bullet time.

1. Master Chief (Halo series)

MasterChiefHalo4While he may not have done anything as gory or as ridiculous as some of the previous characters on my list, he’s certainly beaten the rest in terms of the scale of his feats. Master Chief is the genuine package. A physically augmented soldier with the capabilities to out perform not only humans but also his alien enemies, and an iron will dedication to stopping the alien Covenant in their plans to activate the Halo rings. Master Chief has gone the distance over the course of the 4 Halo games, managing to be heroic, cool and fearless no matter what the danger. What the future holds for the Chief in Halo 5 is uncertain, but I can’t wait to see what he does next. Master Chief is all action, all hero.

So that’s my list. What do you think of the characters on this list? And tell me what your favorite gaming action heroes are in the comment section, on my Facebook or my Twitter.
