Hey everyone, I thought i’d try and gather everyone’s thoughts and impressions into a somewhat comprehensible format, and try and bounce ideas off each other. To start with, I’ll make it real easy for you to understand where I’m coming from:

I started with COD4. Played every COD since and got 10th/Master Prestige in MW3, BOII, Ghosts, AW and BO3. MW2, MW3 and AW are my favorites, and Ghosts has a special place in my heart too. I enjoyed BO3 but had issues with the inconsistency of the experience. I did love the concepts, the gameplay and the guns though, and Spectre kept me interested. With that out of the way, here we go.

I’m liking IW so far. MORE than anything, im just damn happy to have a new COD to play. Halo 5 MP didn’t do it for me (but I loved the campaign), I’ve never liked Destiny MP, and Overwatch is only fun with friends. I only mention these games cause they’re the only other main shooters out right now, so no hate to them, I just can’t enjoy their multiplayers. With COD IW, it’s finally a game I know I can enjoy on my own. My main console is Xbox, but like many others I grew up on PS, so I have a PS4 too. This is the first time I’ve played COD on PS since MW2. Now let’s get into the overview:

Gameplay: Make no mistake, this IS Ghosts’ sequel, in so many ways. The pacing, the movement, the announcements and team mate callouts (which im happy to see return!). It’s definitely not for everyone, and the odd mix of Ghosts and BO3, as well as newer elements, will take some getting used to. But since this is the beta, we only have a snapshot of what’s to come. But overall im warming up to it. Like I said, just happy to have COD back.

Guns: Cool enough. Different variety for everyone, as usual. I would NOT try to use the starting assault rifle too much cause it’ll skew your impression of the game. It’s not that powerful and you’ll be outgunned by SMGs and the burst rifle most of the time, until you get the 3rd AR (KBAR), which IMO is really good. The classic weapons are a nice touch, and I can’t wait to see the full extent of the guns. Like most Infinity Ward games, I’m sure there’ll be an OP SMG and an OP burst rifle, haha.

Rigs: Sort of like specialists, but they seem less prevalent when it comes to their super usage, which I’m ok with. Not a fan of only being able to swap head and body; I seriously miss the full customization in AW, but I guess that’s AW’s thing now. Not sure how balanced their abilities all are, but none so far seem dominating or unstoppable, but then again we haven’t seen all the Rigs yet. Rigs lack the personality of specialists, but from the range of voices I hear, we might be able to choose gender and/or voice, which is nice.

General aesthetic: I personally love the space and future theme. I get that a lot of people are tired of it, just as they got tired of the ‘modern warfare’ theme, but as a lover of shooters and sci-fi, I’m all in with this. I think the ability to choose factions is awesome for 2 reasons. 1: It brings back the multiple faction concept of previous COD games, even though the 2 ‘teams’ are just SDF and UNSA. 2: it’ll be cool to see what unique rewards you get per faction, as well as the unique voice overs and so on. It’s things like this which make a new COD game memorable, so it’s a nice addition.

Connectivity: Ok, this is what you were looking for. It is NOT good enough, not yet. When it works, it feels good. The ‘TTK’ (time to kill) is short, mostly. It feels long when you’re shooting someone forever and they don’t die, but you get melted instantly. But it is genuinely short when all shots are on point, AND when the hit detection works too. Having visible health bars is new and weird, but it’s going to make a lot of this way more obvious, so there’s a conversation to be had about that.

It’s easy to point the finger at any one game for this, but honestly I’ve experienced it in every COD since COD4. Latency is always a sour spot, and it’s hit or miss depending on the player. Hell, it might even be possible that the game you like in the series is dependent on whether you had bad latency. It needs to be fine tuned for sure, because a mix of moving hitboxes, somewhat inconsistent hit detection and general lag made BO3 near unplayable for me, but I have high hopes for this game so I don’t want that to happen again. My experiences with AW and Ghosts were stellar, and only on occasion would bad latency lead to a bad experience, but that’s only my personal thoughts. REMEMBER, this is a beta for IW (or demo, or preview or whatever you wanna call it), so it’s not too late for them to put the finishing touches on.

Summary: I like IW so far. Day 1 was rough cause like many others I didn’t even get to play for hours, and even after 1 game I’d be sitting at the menu for minutes at a time. My first COD beta experience was BO3 on Xb1 and tbh that was a damn good beta, so I’m interested to see what IW on XB1 next week will be like. I was nearly put off this game completely by the awful latency and the feeling that im dying after shooting first (what put me off BO3), but I want to like this game and I want to get better at it. There are SO MANY ISSUES that need ironing out, like every other COD game at launch, and I think most people have valid criticisms/concerns about this beta and the overall game. I firmly believe that this game will have a strong launch, and I can’t wait to play it. As someone who loves Infinity Ward, and loved Ghosts, this game is by and large Ghosts 2, even if it has to wear BO3’s jacket. This was kind of long, so if you read all the way, thanks.
